The Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences, Ag Sciences Global, is hosting a webinar series in fall 2022 to provide information on the impact of the war on agriculture, natural resources, and related sectors in Ukraine. With so much information from various sources circulating in the media currently, it is invaluable to hear the information from Ukrainian experts who are on the ground in Ukraine witnessing the situation first-hand and can offer local perspectives.

The webinar series will start on September 8 and will be held every other Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EST via Zoom.

September 8 – Dr. Andrij Martyn, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv.  Seminar title “Land Relations in Ukraine in Wartime Conditions: Challenges and Solutions”.

September 22 – Dr. Luybov Pankratova,  National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv. Seminar title “Grain and oilseed markets in Ukraine: before war and now”

October 6 – Dr. Oleksandr Labenko, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv. Seminar title “Ukraine under siege: addressing food safety and supply issues”.

October 20 – Dr. Andrian Prokip, Ukrainian Institute for the Future, Kyiv; Keenan Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Washington DC. Speaking on energy markets in Ukraine. Exact title TBD.

November 3 – Dr. Sergiy V. Zibtsev, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv; Head of the Regional Eastern Europe Fire Monitoring Center. Seminar title “Fire management in Ukraine during war with Russia and needs for advanced science for monitoring and management of forests”.

November 17 – Dr. Olga Buchko, CURAD Fellow. Seminar title “Rethinking work-life balance in higher education in Ukraine and the US under new realities”.

December 1 – Dr. Oleg Skydan, Polissia National University, Zhytomyr. Will speak on the Overview of the current state of education and science in Ukraine as impacted by the Russian aggression. Exact seminar title TBD.

The Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences has been engaged in Ukraine for well over 25 years, thanks in large part to the generosity of the Woskob family of State College, Pennsylvania. With support from a large family endowment, the college has supported programs to build the agriculture enterprise in Ukraine as the foundation for the transition from a centralized command economy under communist control to a more open democratic and free enterprise system.

Penn State is a founding member and chair of the Consortium for Ukraine’s Rural and Agricultural Development (CURAD), whose membership includes Ohio State University, Kansas State University, Louisiana State University, and University of Missouri. CURAD supports small and medium-sized agriculture enterprises with a particular focus on gender issues. Through these efforts, CURAD fosters continued progress toward sustainable, democratic land stewardship.
